People Band Names
PSA for musicians: stop giving people names to bands.
Miike Snow, Syd Arthur, Molly Hatchet, Manfred Mann, Mazzy Star, Ira Glass, Cherry Glazerr — it’s confusing. And when I get confused, I get scared. I don’t like being scared.
Maybe we should blame the original culprit, Alice Cooper. They learned their lesson so hard that Alice Cooper is now just the singer’s name instead of the band name like it originally was. You didin’t know that, did you? Learn from Alice Cooper’s mistake.
You can have a person’s name in there as long as there’s something else happening. Alice in Chains? Perfectly acceptable use of Alice. Jimmy Eat World? Chomp away, James.
Hell, just throw in the word “band” afterwards. But don’t do the thing where it’s named after a person who isn’t even in the band Marshall Tucker Band I’m looking in your direction. Or make it a first name only like Lucius so it feels less deceitful. Although that one’s pushing it.
Don’t confuse me. Make major creative decisions based on my opinions and whims. Thanks in advance.
